Thankfully, Carrey has officially said he’s not interested in that. Ace Ventura is a distinctly 1990s slapstick romp and, thusly, we think it should stay that way.Īnd in 2018 there were rumours of a potential third outing. We hope he learned his lesson with the largely atrocious Dumb and Dumber To (2014). It isn’t Dumb and Dumber by a long shot, but it does help raise Ace Ventura above a wacky annoyance.īut we’re hoping Carrey doesn’t decide this series needs a reboot any time soon.

The point – is it funny? Yes, some bits of it are still very amusing. The plot makes little sense and there are glaring plot holes, but that’s not really the point of a goofball comedy. It’s still very stupid and more like a sketch show of Carrey’s funnier SNL moments, but it’s aged a lot better than the first one. It then turns out Ventura did sleep with the Wachati Princess at some point and he’s left to run for his life as the two tribes bear down on him.Ī very 1990s film ending, eh? But on the whole we’d say this is much better than Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The major downside of the movie is that after about an hour of watching Carrey doing what he does best, you realise that Ace Ventura is actually a very annoying character as well and when he isn’t being funny, he just irritates.Anyway, the film wraps itself up with a bit of enforced action as Ventura solves the case and returns the bat in time to avert the tribal war. The saving grace of the character is that he is also a good detective, which is why the movie is also full of really satisfying moments as he manages to out-do the “real police” as they search for a missing dolphin mascot before the Superbowl. From a run-in with a shark, a great sequence at a psychiatric hospital and a very clever scene on an apartment balcony, Carrey is left to let loose in each scene and is clearly having fun doing so. The case is one which makes sense logically and gets to a (problematic) conclusion but with each scene, it gives Carrey a chance to stretch his comedy legs, and there are some very funny moments. Other films rely on the central character being so funny that the movie doesn’t need a “proper” story but Ace Ventura goes a slightly different way.
